The Beginning

The Bangalore Club was founded and began its journey as one of India's most distinguished institutions.

  • 1828, October 31 – Deputy Commissary General, Andrew Dyce acquires the property.
  • 1868 – The formal establishment of the Bangalore United Service Club.
  • 1872, August 30 – Govindoo Chetty sells the property to the Club.
  • 1897 – First record of the Club generating its own electricity.
  • 1898, January 6 – The agreement to build the New Chambers is signed.
  • 1899, November 16 – The government water supply arrives.
  • 1899, February 7 – The Library is established.
1900 - 1910

A Growing Legacy

The Club quickly established itself as one of Bengaluru's most respected social institutions, attracting prominent citizens, military officers and distinguished guests.

  • 1901, October 14 – The Maharaja of Mysore is invited to become a Member.
  • 1901, April 18 – Uncovered badminton courts are sanctioned.
  • 1905, April 27 – The first mention of motor cars in the compound.
  • 1905, April 27 – The first recorded Racquets Tournament is sanctioned.
  • 1906, November 14 – Badminton is sanctioned in the Annexe.
  • 1907 – The Annexe is completed.
  • 1907, July 1 – A Telegram address ‘BUSC’ is confirmed.
  • 1908 – The Bandstand is completed.
  • 1908, June 7 – The Annexe dance floor is completed.
  • 1908, October 20 – A separate Badminton Shed is sanctioned.
  • 1908, August 2 – Cauvery Falls Power Scheme electricity supply is approved.
1911 - 1920

Modern Foundations

As the Club entered a new era, investments in sporting infrastructure and modern conveniences reflected its growing stature, while landmark milestones strengthened its place in Bengaluru's social and cultural history.

  • 1911, April 25 – The two old tennis courts are repaired and used.
  • 1912, April 30 – Two new tennis courts are built.
  • 1912, August 12 – A Telephone is ordered.
  • 1918, January 25 – Colonel J. Desaraj Urs becomes the first Indian Special Honorary Member.
  • 1918, September 2 – Major McGeorge installs the flagstaff on the Club House.
1921 - 1930

A Decade of Progress

The 1920s marked a period of modernization and community growth, with new recreational facilities, national sporting affiliations, and significant developments that strengthened the Club's position as a premier social institution.

  • 1921, September 13 – Dewan Kantharaj Urs is invited to be a Special Honorary Member.
  • 1926, August 10 – The children’s swing and seesaw is installed.
  • 1928, October 22 – Outbreak of cholera on the premises.
  • 1928 – The Minutes are now typewritten.
  • 1929, December 13 – The Club joins the All India Tennis Association (AITA).
  • 1930, August 11 – The Gymkhana is amalgamated with the BUS Club.
1931 - 1940

Expanding Horizons

The 1930s witnessed remarkable growth in the Club's recreational and social life, with new sporting facilities, cultural activities, and historic milestones that paved the way for a more inclusive and modern institution.

  • 1932, May 30 – A Squash Court is built inside the Racquets Court.
  • 1934, September 13 – A Tennis Practice Wall is sanctioned.
  • 1935, December 11 – Construction of the Married Quarters begins.
  • 1936, October 29 – First recorded film screening at the Annexe.
  • 1937, December 17 – The Swimming Pool is sanctioned.
  • 1938, February 5 – The Diving Tower and Spring-Board are sanctioned.
  • 1939, June 19 – The Mixed Club opens.
  • 1939, October 31 – Indians are admitted as elected members to the Club.
  • 1940, October 23 – Major Partap Narain becomes the first Indian Officer on the Committee.
1941 - 1950

A New Identity

The 1940s marked a transformative chapter in the Club's history, bringing greater inclusivity, modern infrastructure, and a defining change that established the identity by which the Club is known today.

  • 1941, April 28 – Mr. A.C. Gupta becomes the first Indian civilian on the General Committee.
  • 1941, May 26 – Modern sanitation is completed.
  • 1946, September 29 – The Club crest is re-designed.
  • 1946, October 18 – The Bangalore United Service Club becomes the Bangalore Club.
